I'm relieved to tell you this is a solution rather than a cry for help. I was going nuts trying to install a CCC clone upgrade to a bigger HD on my wife's old Macbook, (Intel, pre-unibody), something I've done successfully several times before. The Mac would reboot without problem from the HD externally, but, when installed was not recognised by the mac which would would invite me to eject or initialise. Disk utility would report it as MBR once installed even though it had been formatted correctly as GUID with Mac OS journaled. Whether I selected the new target in start up preferences or by holding down option on reboot, it just would not show, even though it rebooted every time from the separate, mains powered USB bus without any problem.
I followed a couple of support threads here to no avail, even after reformatting and swapping the HDs several times. The target drive, by the way, is a 750 Gb Hitachi Travelstar 2.5" 5400 tr/mn. I finally solved the problem by simply inversing the procedure. I hooked the old HD up externally and cloned to the installed new HD as target et voilà! I'm up and running and happy, (though I'd still like to know why if you have any ideas).
Also, you may like to know, your automatic messages after my multiple copies in vain, made me feel so guilty in spite of my frustration, that I contributed a second time from my wife's computer. Great software and service, keep up the good work,
CCC Report ID: 0
Thank you so much for this report. I've heard of this exact problem before:

I'll add a link to this discussion to the documentation so others can benefit from the suggestion.
Your quick replies amaze me. Paris is pretty, but you should
living and working in France sometime!`
